Get Paid to Tell Better Stories in GIS

Speaker: Dr. Fahui Wang (Cyril & Tutta Vetter Alumni Professor and Associate Dean of the Pinkie Gordon Lane Graduate School, Louisiana State University).

Time: February 23 (Friday) from 330pm-430pm

Location: Langford Adam’s Presentation Room (A212)

Abstract: This presentation uses 5 themes to demonstrate how GIS helps tell better stories across humanities and social sciences, and by extension, their applications in public policy. They all fit under a broad umbrella “Spatial Computational Social Sciences”. Specifically, case studies come from (1) history & linguistics, (2) (urban) economics, (3) sociology (or criminology in particular), (4) public health, and (5) (spatial) planning. The studies have been supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, National Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health. In every story, the talk addresses what the issue is, where the science is, and what the impacts are.

The talk is co-hosted by Center for Geospatial Sciences, Applications, and Technology, TAMIDS-Urban AI Lab, Department of Landscape Architecture & Urban Planning, and Department of Geography.
